Rappel
Les origines des SPENS d'Ecosse sont maintenant controversées. Jusqu'à la fin du 19éme siècle tous les historiens font descendre les "SPENS" d'un fils cadet de DUNCAN, Comte de FIFE et c'est cette position qui est toujours celle très officielle du KING'S LYON of ARMS dans tous les certificats délivrés. Néanmoins, Sir Iain MONCREIFFE of that Ilk, 11th baronet and Albany Herald of Scotland en 1961, dans ses recherches sur les SPENS retient la possibilité que les SPENS puissent descendre de Duncan Comte de FIFE par une de ses filles.
C'est pourquoi nous mentionnerons l'hypothèse de certains historiens pour qui les SPENS d'Ecosse sont issus d'une des familles normandes titulaire de l'office de "Dispensator" des Ducs de Normandie, dont la fonction a donné le nom de "Le DESPENSIRE ou DESPENSIER ou DESPENCER".
La première famille a avoir tenu cet office est une branche des seigneurs de TANCARVILLE qui à la fin du Xème siècle a pris le nom de seigneur d'ABBETOT par mariage de GERARD de TANCARVILLE vers 990 avec HéLINDIS dame de la seigneurie de Saint-Jean d'Abbetot. Cet office est resté dans la famille d'Abbetot jusqu'au début du XIéme siécle, puis l'office de "Dispensator" est passé à plusieurs familles de 1100 à 1120, date à laquelle il est dans la famille TALVAS MONTGOMMERY en possession de GUILLAUME TALVAS le DESPENSIER MONTGOMERY. Ce dernier a eu de nombreux enfants de sa femme Alix de BOURGOGNE dont un fils puiné appelé John Le DESPENSIER. C'est lui qui serait pour certains généalogistes et historiens médiévalistes porté sur la liste de Walter Fitz-Alan, le premier "High STEWART" héréditaire d'Ecosse en tant que premier "DISPENSATOR" en Ecosse. Cette approche n'est étayée par aucune preuve, mais est historiquement tout à fait plausible.En conséquence,elle doit être retenue comme une hypothèse très réaliste.
Dans tous les cas de figures une chose est sûre: c'est que les SPENS descendent de DUNCAN Comte de FIFE par un de ses fils (JOHN) ou par une de ses filles qui aurait épousé le dit JOHN, car ils en ont de tout temps porté les armes "d'or au lion de gueules armé et lampassé d'azur".
Néanmoins, il faut noter que les SPENS ont aussi toujours porté "le frétté ou losangé" armes caractéristiques de tous les "Le DESPENSIRE ou DESPENSIER ou DESPENCER" qui sont des armes parlantes de l'office de DISPENSATOR.

The King Malcolm III seized the Crown and his son, Aedh, married Queen Gruoch¹s only living granddaughter. He was created Earl of Fife and hereditary abbot of Abernethy. Fife, symbolically representing the ancient royal line of his wife, he became the undisputed second man of the kingdom. He bore on his shield the red lion rampant and was accorded three distinct privileges: to lead the vanguard of the Scottish army; to enthrone the king of Scots at his coronation; and the right of sanctuary for all of his kinsmen, even for the crime of murder, if they reached the cross near Abernethy, after which a small fine would be levied instead of more severe penalties.

P-13/3 PATRICK de SPENS, captain of boat, laird of lands in Lauder in 1426. He is mentioned also in a charter of donation in favour of the monastory of Soltray in 1426.
p-13/4 GIRAULT de SPENS of "Achland", was captain of 10 esquires and of a company of scotch archers in 1419 in France in the first contingent of the scotch army of 150 mens-at-arms and 300 archers under the command of his parent William DOUGLAS. The others captains are : Alexander de ALEXANDRY, Thomas CUNYNGHAM, David FLEMING, William FLOCART, William FRASER, Thomas KILPATRICK, Andry and John de MELDRUM, John OFUR, John TOD.

P-14/3 THOMAS, born around 1415 and died the 14/04/1480, first bishop of Galloway in 1451 then of Aberdeen in 1459. He was appointed Lord Privy Seal of Scotland in 1458 and ambassador of the King James III of Scotland from 1446 to his death. He forged the peace between James III of Scotland and EDWARD of IV of England and arranged the historic meeting between EDWARD IV of England and LOUIS XI at the bridge of Picquigny. In various diplomatic missions, he gained the esteem of Kings of Scotland, England and France, and of Charles the Bold, duke of Flanders and Burgundy (which was slained in 1477 by his brother PATRICK de SPENS).
p-14/4 PATRICK de SPENS, Lord of Bohapple, was officer of the company of 24 Scots guards send in France by James II of Scotland to Charles VII of France in 1450, after the diplomatic mission of the 28/12/1449 of his brother THOMAS de SPENS. He became ancestor of the french branch, Barons de SPENS d'ESTIGNOLS.

 P 14/4 - PATRICK de SPENS Baron de SPENS et lord de Bohapple né vers 1420 et décédé vers 1485, 4ème fils de JOHN de SPENS seigneur de GLEN-DOUGLAS et de BOHAPPLE, LORD DRUMMOND, Baron de LATHALLAN, "Custodian and Stewart" of the Prince Jacques d'Ecosse, duc de Rothesay, puis Roi d'Ecosse en 1437, et d'ISABEL WEMYSS of Rires, Officier des 24 Gardes du Corps de Gentilhommes Ecossais envoyé en France par Jacques II d'Ecosse en 1450, Louis XI lui accorda en 1474 des lettres de naturalité rédigées dans les termes les plus honorables enregistrées le 15/08/1475 à Paris. Dans ces lettres il est qualifié de baron et "bien aimé". C'est pour lui témoigner sa reconnaissance pour ses services que LOUIS XI le qualifia de premier homme d'armes de France (dans une escarmouche début janvier 1477, à la tête de gardes du corps écossais, il défit la garde du Duc Charles le Témèraire qu'il blessa mortellement) et que le roi CHARLES VIII prit pour devise le "cri" des SPENS: "Si Deus Pro Nobis, Quis Contra Nos?". Ses principaux ouvrages sont : ses mémoires ("Printemps Gris" en 1974, "Derniers étés" en 1975, "Le hussard malgré lui" en 1976, "La loi des vainqueurs" en 1986), "Grain de Beauté" prix des Deux-Magots en 1957, "La nuit des longs museaux" prix Louis-Barthou en 1979, "Quiberon" en 1948, "La vierge noire" en 1952, "Steve" en 1953, "Les bois de Dompierre" en 1953, "Les rochers de Kilmarnock" en 1956, "Le roi de Bergame" en 1955, "Les Hasards du voyage" en 1957, "Fontaine Française" en 1958, "La route de Varennes" en 1962, "Un séjour sur la terre" en 1968, "Red Boy" en 1982, "La palette tragique" en 1984, "Cyrano de Bergerac" en 1989. Il signa aussi de nombreux ouvrages sous les pseudonymes: "Philippe MASSART", "Ludovic PREBOIS", etc.. et écrivit "en tant que nègre" des livres signés par Aimable et Joffo. Il fut marié 3 fois et n'eut pas de postérité de ses trois mariages avec Mesdames Monique SENEZ, Josette HENOUIL et Odile GUILHOT.
